Microsoft Excel Tutorial: How can you build a Power Map with two different data sets?
Welcome to another episode of the MrExcel netcast, where we explore all things Excel. In today's episode, we will be discussing how to create a Power Map using two different data sets. This is a question that was brought up by a member of the audience at one of my Power Excel seminars, and I'm excited to share the solution with you.
First, let's clarify what we mean by two data sets. In this example, we have one data set organized by state and another by city. Our goal is to create a Power Map that combines both of these data sets to show a comprehensive view of our data. So, how do we do it?
The key is to get both data sets into the data model before launching Power Map. If you have the Power Pivot tab, this is a simple process of selecting each data set and clicking "Add to Data Model." However, if you don't have this tab, there are a few other ways to achieve the same result. You can use Power Query, create a Pivot Table and select the option to add the data to the data model, or even use the Data tab and select "From Table" and then "Close & Load" to add the data to the data model.
Once both data sets are in the data model, you can launch Power Map and start building your map. You can choose to create a column chart or a filled area map, and use the data from both data sets to customize your map. And don't worry, if you're not a fan of the default color scheme, you can easily change it in the Layer Options.

Step 1: Get both tables into the Data Model. You can do this one of three ways:
1a) Power Query with Load To, Add this data to the data model
1b) Power Pivot - add this data to the data model
1c) Create a pivot table, choosing the box, add this data to the data model
When you launch Power Map, you can build the first map, then Add Layer and use the other data set.
