Bruce wrote this song for the 1987 movie "Light of Day," directed by Paul Schrader and starring Michael J. Fox and rocker Joan Jett. Jett would later perform the song with the fictional band created for the film, The Barbusters, but it became a staple in her live concerts. The story goes that Springsteen donated the song to the film director as compensation for using the title Schrader originally intended for the movie: "Born In The USA." Written during Springsteen's divorce from Julianne Phillips, the song subtly references the rejection of inauthentic relationships between people with different value structures.
Bruce never recorded the song himself, but it became a regular feature in his concerts. In 2001, following the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York, Bruce Springsteen and Joan Jett performed "Light of Day" together at a benefit concert for the victims.
In 1993, it appeared on his album "In Concert Unplugged" and as a B-side on some of his singles of the time, such as "Streets of Philadelphia" and "I Should Fall Behind" (live). Joe Grushecky recorded the song for the Springsteen tribute album, "One Step Up / Two Steps Back."
In 1995, the Light of Day Foundation, dedicated to fighting Parkinson's disease, was established, borrowing its name from Springsteen's song.
