STORYLINE:
US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld met Uzbek President Islam Karimov at the presidential palace in Tashkent on Friday.
Their meeting came as the U-S Army dispatched about one-thousand infantry soldiers to the former Soviet state and the Uzbek leader announced he had granted permission for U-S forces to use an air base there.
A senior U-S official traveling with Rumsfeld said some one-thousand members of the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum, New York, were enroute to Uzbekistan from the United States on Friday to provide security for other U-S forces in the region.
Karimov said a legal document spelling out the specifics of the arrangement, including what he calls "guarantees for his country's security" was being completed and would eventually be made public.
