Silva Harapetian’s Armenian family fled Iran for Germany when she was 12, and a few years later moved to the United States. I’ve known Silva for 20 years now, since we worked together at KMPH NewsRadio in Fresno. She’s since worked in several markets, including Austin, Detroit and Miami. In this episode we talk about the importance of mental health and self care — especially as a journalist, a woman, a person of color. We also discuss life in war-torn Iran, adjusting to a relatively brief stay in Germany, navigating life in the US as the oldest child in an immigrant family — and how she adjusted not just during the pandemic but when her life was forced to change in 2018.
