Earlier this year I embarked on a trip round the UK to visit some of the countries best heritage railways. After a successful visit to the Churnet Valley Railway on Day One, the second day really took things up a notch as I headed to the famous Severn Valley Railway for the first time ever.
In steam on the day of my visit was 2857 the GWR Heavy Goods Loco along with the Class 52 Western Champion and Class 20 hauling the diesel services. The set of LNER teak coaches was also in use and so I got to ride up and down the line in these fabulous coaches in one of the compartments.
I was astounded at how well each of the stations are kept on the Severn Valley Railway and you can see the team of volunteers are really dedicated to keeping all aspects of the line in fantastic condition.
The Severn Valley Railway also has a museum at Highley station named The Engine House which you could easily spend a day at in itself. This houses a collection locos and rolling stock the railway owns but isn't currently using. Everything is in a very good cosmetic condition and like the rest of the railway, The Severn Valley Railway have really gone all out with this.
Thank you to all the volunteers and staff at the railway for making me so welcome! I'm so glad I've finally visited The Severn Valley Railway and if you haven't been yourself I Highley* recommend you take a trip over there in the future.
*Pun intended!
