The Western Arctic Championship Race began in Kotzebue in the 1960s and later became known as the Archie Ferguson/Willie Goodwin Memorial Race or The Kotzebue Race. The race is approximately 220 miles long and starts in Kotzebue, cuts across rough lake ice, then up through the Kobuk River to the village of Noorvik. From Noorvik to Kiana and then through a mountainous pass to the village of Selawik. From Selawik across low rolling hills back to the village of Noorvik and then back onto the Finish line in Kotzebue.
This race is made possible by the hard working volunteers in Kotzebue, Noorvik, Kiana, Selawik, and by the Kotzebue Lions Club and the Kotzebue Sound Racing Association (K.S.R.A.) Thank you for making it possible to continue the tradition of this Great Race!
