How we protect our potted queen palm from cold temperatures. The 'Queen palm' (Syagrus romanzoffiana) is hardy in US zones 9b-11 so we must grow her in a container. We love the graceful arching fronds that sway in the wind providing a magically tropic vibe in the garden. She is sunk into the ground (in her pot) in the summer and then we bring her to the patio in the winter. She no longer fits into the greenhouse upright. If we are expecting temperatures in the mid twenties and below we lay her on the bricks and cover her with tarps. The residual heat in the patio keeps her warm, if temperatures are expected in the teens, we add a strand of Christmas lights and she is fine.
