Shane: Hi, I'm Shane with etrailer.com. Today, I'm going to walk you through how to install the Curt Class One Trailer Hitch Receiver on your 2016 Kia Optima. Adding a hitch like this onto your vehicle is going to allow you to put a cargo carrier, bike rack, or maybe even pull a small trailer. Putting a cargo carrier on, it's going to allow you to get items out of the vehicle, put them in or on the cargo carrier to give you more room inside.Maybe you're putting a bike rack on, it's going to allow you to put the bike racks on, instead of trying to load them inside the vehicle or maybe up on a roof rack. Keep in mind, this is a class one hitch. It's going to be an inch and a quarter by inch and a quarter receiver tube opening.
So, you're going to be limited to class one accessories.Reinforced collar to give us a little extra stability there. Our hitch pin hole, is going to be 1/2-inch in diameter. It's going to take a standard 1/2-inch hitch pin. Hitch pin and clip does not come with this hitch. However, they can be found here at etrailer.com.
We're going to have plate style safety chain loops. You can see, we have very large openings. It's going to give us plenty of room for different size safety chain hooks. This hitch is a steel construction with a black powder coat finish. It's really going to help resist any rust or corrosion. And stay looking nice for a really long time. Now, that you'll notice, our cross tube is visible.
However, it sits fairly close to the bottom of the fascia. So, it's not going to really take away from the aesthetics of the vehicle. Now, I'm going to give you a few measurements and weight capacities to help you when deciding on any of your hitch mount accessories you may need. From the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost part of our bumper, it's going to be about four inches. That number is important for any of your hitch mount accessories that may fold up against your vehicle. From the ground to the top innermost part of your receiver tube, is going to be about 11-inches.
That number is important for any of your hitch mount accessories that may require a little bit more ground clearance. As far as our weight capacities go, we're going to have a 200-pound max tongue weight, which is the downward pressure on the inside of the receiver tube. So, when you have that cargo carrier, bike rack loaded down, you want to make sure you're not exceeding the downward pressure. We're going to have a 2000-pound gross trailer weight, which is how much the hitch can pull. That's going to be the trailer plus the load included. I always recommend checking the owner's manual of the Kia. Make sure the vehicle can withstand the amount of weight. You're going to go with the lowest number between the vehicle and the hitch. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's walk you through how to get it installed. To start our installation, we need to lower our exhaust. We're going to start by hanging a strap. You can hang it anywhere from the frame. You just want to make sure you're going underneath the exhaust pipe. We're going to cinch it up. We're going to have two exhaust hangers. We're going to have one here in front of the axle, come back here, we're going to have one right here on the side of the pipe. We're going to spray each one of the hangers with some soapy water or lubricant if you have some. We'll take a pry bar, put it in between there. Then, we can pry this off. Then, we're going to take a 10-millimeter socket and remove our heat shield. We're going to have one bolt here, and two up here. Once we get those off, we can pull down our heat shield. We're going to set it aside for right now.Over on our driver's side, we need to remove this plastic underbody panel if we have one. Take a 10-millimeter socket, we're going to have a nut here, we're going to have a nut right up here on the front side. Then we're going to have some pushpin fasteners that run along the outside here. Take a trim panel tool or a screwdriver if you have one. Pry this center, and then the fastener. Then, we'll pull our panel down and set it aside. We're going to have two pads on each frame rail we need to remove. This one and this one. It's going to be the same on both sides. This one here is just a foam pad. This one's going to be a plug. This forward most hole, we need to enlarge it big enough to get our bolt through. You can see how the head's a little bit wider. There's two ways to do it. I'm going to use a step bit. You can use a grinding bit and grind off the edges if you want, big enough to get the bolt up through it. What we're going to do, is we're going to take our pull wi
