Manchester City started their Premier League title defense with a comfortable win at Stamford Bridge. Erling Haaland marked his 100th appearance for Manchester City by scoring the opening goal in a match. He scored in the 18th minute, bringing his total to 91 goals for City since joining in 2022. Mateo Kovacic, a former Chelsea player, secured the win for City with a late curling shot from outside the penalty area.
Nicolas Jackson nearly equalized for Chelsea after City goalkeeper Ederson spilled a shot from Cole Palmer into his path, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Jackson later had a chance with a first-time volley, but it was saved by Ederson. Manchester City also came close to scoring again through Haaland, and Rico Lewis had a goal disallowed before Mateo Kovacic secured the win with a late goal. As always Manchester City gets the job done.
