In a nutshell, if dogs were not, they would die.
Food is built into the bare necessities of life for dogs.
They need it !
Now this dog in the photo was not interested in food, until he came to us. He was more interested in the environment, more interested in doing his own thing other then working for food.
We have had previous session that focused on relationship building so when he come for this session, the focus from the dog and the relationship was much better that he was more focused on humans and therefore much more into food, he was calmer, he was more relaxed and these are often reasons, if the dog is not, they won’t take treats.
If you want your dog to be more treat motivated, then follow these tips.
MAKE SURE THE TREATS ARE NOT GARBAGE !
Sounds simple, but I’m not motivated by food I don’t really care for. Take salad for example vs burgers, burgers win hands down.
MAKE SURE YOUR DOG AND YOU ARE TOGETHER AS ONE !
trying to use food with a dog that wants to do anything other then be with you, is often going to fail. Focus on exercises and things you can do together and focus on calming exercise, such as lead walking, place, crate training. Focus on rewarding your dog when it’s calm and when it does something you ask and calm down on the free fuss.
STOP LEAVING FOOD DOWN FOR THE DOG TO GRACE AT LIKE ITS A CAT !
Dogs are scavengers, leaving the food down for a dog is so problematic. It often prevents a regular toileting session, because they can eat whenever they feel like it, thus increasing the chances of accidents in the house.
It means they can eat whenever they feel like it, so food you’re offering, they can take it or leave it and it’s also a big cause of fussy eating in dogs.
STOP GIVING TREATS FOR FREE !
If your dog knows it’s getting a treat for nothing, on a daily basis, using food for training will not be a real incentive for your dog. Dogs are clever and work things out quickly.
If none of the above works for you, then the best thing to do is STOP FEEDING FROM A BOWL.
That’s right ! If you break your dogs daily food allowance down into segments, for example if your dog has 4 cups of food a day, break that into 4 little sessions you can focus on training. When your dog realises it’s not going to eat from a bowl, but only eats from your hand, it will become a lot more food motivated, it will become a lot more reliant on you and a lot more eager to work for you.
DONT STARVE YOUR DOG ! A common practice for a lot of Force Free Trainers (not all of them) is to starve the dog for a couple of days so it’s desperate to eat. This is a cockwombles way of training and unnecessary.
Last tip, walk your dog before feeding and not on a full stomach. It’s actually very dangerous to walk your dog directly after feeding.
