This is an optional step, but if you're serious about protecting your oven from the elements you need to KEEP WATER OUT. In cold climates frozen water will expand under your oven and shift the base when temperatures fluctuate. In warm climates sitting water will mildew and discolor the area around the base.
Protection benefits aside, that simple bead of calk makes the edges look amazing and we all want our outdoor kitchens to look pristine.
