This animation depicts results from a solar wind forecast model used at NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center, to predict when an event on the sun's outer atmosphere (center) may reach Earth (right) and cause a geomagnetic storm. This model run, initiated 1 am EST Monday Jan. 23, shows the brunt of the space weather system reaching Earth on Tuesday morning, Jan. 24, about 9 am EST.
