A very brief video and narrative to introduce you to medieval Spain under Muslim rule, approximately 700-1492 CE, and some of its scientific and scholarly highlights. The video mainly excerpts the book of Jim al-Khalili, House of Wisdom (Penguin 2012), chapter 13 (Andalusia). The excerpted portions, read by Simon Vance, offer a quick overview of the founding of the first breakaway Umayyad dynasty in southern Spain / Al-Andalus / Andalusia (Abd al-Rahman I, 711 CE), with its capital at Córdoba, and prominent Muslim scientists, philosophers, mathematicians, and musicians of subsequent centuries, including Ziryab, Abbas ibn Firnas, ibn Rushd (Averroes), al-Khwarizmi, al-Idrisi the geographer, and others. Illustrative images and some additional caption info have been added.
