Tabla: Pt. Mukesh Jadhav | Recorded in Mumbai (2001)
Shri Arup Banerjee (14.Apr.1957 - 10.Mar.2018) was a Sitarist, Composer and Music teacher of the highest order. In the words of Dr. Bhaskar Dasgupta, "He was the scion of a dynasty – the Bishnupur Gharana, the only classical music gharana of Bengal. He was an exponent of the school that inspired some of the best remembered tunes of Rabindrasangeet. He came from a family that wrote the first musical texts of twentieth century India ‘Sangeet Chandrika, Sangeet Manjari and Mridanga Darpan'."
Shri Banerjee received his initial training from his Sitarist father, Shri Jogesh Banerjee and Dhrupadiya uncle, Shri Paresh Banerjee. His elder cousin Prasanta Thakur guided the ample Sitar talents to maturity. This was sharpened by distinguished Gurus Pt. Indranil Bhattacharya and Shri Ajay Sinha Ray. His skills were further honed under the guidance of the legend, Swarasamrat Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, during a stint in San Rafael where he also taught the assembled students at the College. His repertoire was embellished by his final Guru Prof. Santosh Bandopadhyay.
