This is from Title Match Network's exclusive new series with the legendary Greg Valentine.
Hammer shares his thoughts on his old friend, Sgt Slaughter (aka Bob Remus). Valentine and the Sarge wrestled several times in WWF and were both featured on the big Wrestlemania VII card in Los Angeles.
Originally, Sgt Slaughter was a babyface character, earning cheers everywhere he went. By the time the Gulf War came around, Vince McMahon pitched the idea to turn Slaughter into a villainous Iraqi sympathizer.
This move garnered massive heat, resulting in threats to Sarge and his entire family. The angle moved on however and culminated against Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania VII.
Originally booked for the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, this Mania had the infamous venue change to the LA Sports Arena. Some say the move was a result of low ticket sales while others claimed the threats were too severe to risk running the Coliseum.
