In this video, I removed an OE (original equipment) engine oil cooler / heat exchanger from a salvage yard 1994 Camry with the I4 5SFE engine to retro fit it into my 1999 Camry. Although I use nothing but synthetic oil in my car for increased performance and longevity, I believe the oil cooler adds an extra level of protection. Since installing this oil cooler coupled with a oil catch can, my oil consumption has decreased by approximately 70 to 80 percent.
Starting around 1996, Toyota deleted the engine oil cooler / heat exchanger from their four cylinder 5SFE engine found in the Camry (other vehicles using this engine were the Celica, RAV4 and MR2). To reduce cost, Toyota started a cost savings initiative with their 3rd generation Camry by either eliminating or reducing what they felt was unnecessary component complexity. Unfortunately, Toyota did not change the owner's manual recommending oil change service intervals from 7,500 miles to 5,000. Although commercially available, the auto industry had not recommended nor endorsed the use of synthetic motors that provided extended oil change intervals and protection from excessive heat and cold operating environments. The elimination of the oil cooler /heat exchanger combined with 7,500 mile conventional motor oil service intervals resulted in engine oil failures from (what I believe) excess heat. Oil degradation from heat can cause breakdown in oil viscosity leading to severe engine wear and sludge build up. A service bulletin was issued by Toyota when high engine warranty claims were experienced. They modified the oil change service interval to 5,000 miles or less and they honored customer warranty claims.
