Why did Dr. John McDougall die? Even though Dr. John McDougall died at 77 years of age, which is not young man, I thought he’d live to at least 100 due to his low-fat vegan diet.
Dr. John McDougall appeared healthy, but a bit too thin so he tried to gain a few pounds by eating nuts. Being skinny is not a bad thing. It’s actually healthier to be underweight than overweight. People who are overweight need to be concerned about their health because they are the ones who are at greater risk of heart disease and strokes.
Dr. John McDougall had a stroke when he was only eighteen due to his unhealthy diet of hot dogs, fast food, fried food, and limited fruits and vegetables. He also drank alcohol and smoke cigarettes, so it’s incredible that he lived for 77 years.
A good diet doesn’t cancel out all the years a person treated their bodies horribly, but a healthy diet can correct and reverse most diseases. This brings me back to the question of what did Dr. McDougall die from? Do we, the public have a right to know the cause of Dr. McDougall’s death? When the McDougall family is ready, I think they should let people know his cause of death because he was a famous public figure.
Dr. Atkins, a cardiologist, whose low-carb, meat-based diet, which is the opposite of Dr. McDougall’s high-carb, low-fat, vegan diet; died of a heart attack. The initial public disclosure was that Dr. Atkin’s died after slipping on ice, but it was later revealed that he died from a heart attack. I’m sure that Dr. Atkin’s popular diet book publisher didn’t want that information to be disclosed.
The Atkins diet was not a healthy diet. People complained about increased cholesterol levels, brain fog, bad breath and constipation.
Dr. John McDougall’s high-carb vegan diet reverses heart disease, diabetes and other diseases, so I’m curious as to what he died from as people don’t die from old age; they die from an infection or a disease. It’s highly unlikely that Dr. McDougall died from a heart condition.
After searching for answers as to what Dr. John McDougall died from, I found information about Dr. McDougall on Wikipedia that was not only negative, but false and food-biased.
Wikipedia states that Dr. John McDougall’s low-fat starch-based fad diet is restrictive because of limited food choices which may lead to a feeling of deprivation, which I find laughable because a low-carb diet is restrictive, and causes heavy flatulence. I know of no diet that is fart-free. In fact, people who eat low-carb diets have more gas because they are constipated.
Wikipedia also states that Dr. McDougall’s starch-based diet may cause deficiencies and poor mineral absorption due to excess fiber. This exemplifies the lack of knowledge whoever wrote that because fiber is an essential nutrient and foods that contain fiber also include numerous micronutrients that a human body needs to thrive and survive.
If you don’t know what Dr. McDougall’s starch-based diet is about, it’s a diet composed of 90% of calories from starches. Starches include whole grains, such as pasta, bread, rice and quinoa; beans (including soy), peas, and lentils; potatoes, and squash. Greens are included, but less emphasized so people don’t fill up on leafy greens for fear of being too underweight.
Nuts, avocados and seeds are limited on the McDougall plan because of concern people will eat too many of these high fat foods and become overweight. Oils are avoided since they are inflammatory and increase heart disease risk. Mushrooms are included. Salt and sugar are permitted in small amounts if needed to make the food taste good.
Fruit is included but limited to prevent weight gain. I don’t agree with everything Dr. McDougall recommends or says. For instance, fruitarians, who eat the majority, or all of their calories from fruit, tend to be extremely thin, if not anorexic.
If the default diet was McDougall’s starch-based diet, instead of the standard American diet, there would be fewer fat people, less disease and less money spent on drugs and health care. While the starch-based solution is definitely healthy, adding a daily raw cruciferous salad, flax and chia seeds for more omega 3 fats, and removing the limitation on avocados, the starch-solution would be the ideal diet that most people would enjoy and maintain good health and a long, fulfilling life.
