Taiwan has demanded that China release a Taiwanese fishing boat, the Dajinman 88, which was intercepted by Chinese coastguard vessels near the Kinmen archipelago. Taiwanese maritime authorities attempted a rescue but were blocked by Chinese boats. They called for Beijing to refrain from political manipulation and urged the release of the ship and its six crew members. The boat was boarded just over 20km from mainland China. Tensions in the region have heightened due to increased presence of Chinese vessels, including sand dredgers and fishing boats near the Kinmen archipelago.
