In this video, NCAT Horticulture Specialist Guy Ames takes us through the process of pruning a young pear tree. He demonstrates important principles of pruning: respecting apical dominance, maximizing air flow and sunlight penetration, removing diseased and damaged wood, and removing branches growing back into the tree in order to favor outward growth. Guy explains and demonstrates the difference between a heading back cut and a thinning cut when pruning. He also explains that while growth habits differ between varieties and species of fruit trees, the pruning principles remain the same.
