Waterloo 1815. General Pierre Cambronne is in command of the last remnants of the Old Guard, so that the rest of the Napoleon's army can escape. British general Calville called on him to surrender.
His reply was either:
"Merde!" ("Shit!") - meaning "Go to hell!" - more famous, less historicaly accurate
or
"La garde meurt et ne se rend pas !" ("The Guard dies and does not surrender!") - more likely to be his true words
Noone really knows what did Cambronne say or even if he did say anything.
