Today, the world’s population is more than three times larger than it was in 1950. The global human population reached 8.0 billion in 2022 from an estimated 2.5 billion people in 1950, adding 1 billion people since 2010 and 2 billion since 1998. It took 37 years for the population to double after 1950 and it's estimated that it will take over 70 years to double again. The fastest population growth occurred between 1962-1965, when it was increasing at an average rate of 2.1% per year. However, the rate of population growth has slowed by over half since then. In 2020, for the first time since 1950, the rate of population growth fell below 1%. The global population is projected to reach 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050.
