A dramatic decrease in the amount of cod that fishermen are allowed to catch has led them to find better ways of controlling which species end up in their nets. This "topless" net design eliminates most of the top panel of the trawl net, allowing species that are found slightly higher in the water column to escape while retaining species that are found directly on the sea floor.
