There are more workers hired to protect specific people, places and things than police officers with a mandate to protect the public at large. With over 10,380 registered companies and over 2.5 million registered security guards of which 600,000 are active and a further 2 million reserves, they far outnumber the South African Police Service and South African Army, combined. So why is South Africa obsessed with private security?
