Hua Chunying, a spokersperson for China’s foreign ministry, warned on Wednesday that the country would impose retaliatory sanctions after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered an end to Hong Kong’s special economic status.
Trump on Tuesday signed legislation, and an executive order, that would penalize China for its “oppressive actions” against the citizens of Hong Kong. Included in the legislation was the Hong Kong Autonomy Act, which ends Hong Kong’s special economic status under U.S. law.
Hua responded that China would issue sanctions to “safeguard our legitimate interests” and argued that the U.S. “undermines the basic principles of international law” in its actions against China.
“If the U.S. continues with its current course of action, China will inevitably respond,” she said.
