I am often criticised for discussing narcissism and people struggling with their own narcissism from a place of compassion. In this video, I want to clear up some misconceptions about compassion and about narcissism.
Compassion isn't about being nice and kind. It is about being attuned to suffering and motivated to alleviate it. For those who have been through abusive or hurtful relationships with someone driven by pathological narcissism, the first place to start is having compassion for themselves.
Many people who have been close to a narcissistic person are aware of their suffering and want to alleviate it. That doesn't mean you should be "nice" and tolerate abusive behaviour. This isn't compassionate. This is more often conflict avoidance and is hurtful to you and enables the other person to continue a pattern of abusive and toxic behaviour.
Being compassionate means drawing boundaries, confronting behaviour and acting to keep ourselves safe and to give the opportunity to the other person to change, whether they take it or not.
