I first discovered Cat Cat Village while researching places to explore and capture while in Sapa last year. Given how it has been widely marketed as an attraction, many would say it is a tourist trap. And to some extent it will be if you decide to purchase their local handmade products there, such as their popular fabrics.
But if you look at it from another perspective, the charming riverside village provides a stable livelihood for the local villagers of the Hmong tribe, whether they sell their unique handcrafted products, serve as performers at their periodic culture show where they enlighten tourists on their history, or even bring their animals out for photo opportunities with tourists.
From a travel filmmakers' point of view, Cat Cat Village afforded me many interesting shots and the opportunity to see the locals in action added so much more cultural value to the location rather than just being a spot close to nature along a river and gushing waterfalls. It was paradise as I spent four hours there with both my camera and drone, capturing shots in changing weather conditions as the mist and light rain obscured and revealed new compositions and emotional undertones.
Shot with Sony A7III, in 4K 30FPS HLG3 Picture Profile, with Tamron f2.8 lenses, 17-28mm for wides and gimbal shots, 28-75mm for close-ups and bokeh shots. Stabilised with the Zhiyun Weebill-S gimbal. Aerial shots captured using DJI Mavic Air 2, in 4K 30FPS D-Cinelike Picture Profile. Edited and coloured in Premiere Pro.
