A deadly bus crash in Peru on Thursday left at least 12 people dead and more than 30 injured. The interprovincial bus was travelling along the Arequipa-Puno highway, carrying 50 passenger and several children on board at the time.
It departed from Juliaca at 3:30 am, and was expected to arrive Arequipa by 8:30am. The accident occurred around 7:35am, at the 87 kilometer marker. According to witnesses, excessive speed could have been the cause. 11 passengers were found dead at the scene, while another died later in hospital. More than 30 passengers were injured, among them were three children
Deadly crashes are a regular occurrence in the mountainous regions of Peru. Sixteen people died in another bus crash in the same region a few weeks ago. Poor road conditions, badly maintained vehicles, and reckless driving are all contributing factors.
