While the heavy vignetting, high contrast and extreme grain in Serge Varaxin's series might create an unsettling feeling in the viewer, there's something far more innocent at play here. Serge forms trust and ease with the sitter. 'Children often feel shy and insecure in front of a camera lens, but when they wear a mask it seems to offer them some kind of protection,' says Serge. 'With a mask on it’s easy for a child to get into a given role - underneath they feel free and relaxed.' there's also something far more innocent at play here: children interacting in front of a camera when they might otherwise feel inhibited. With an aesthetic resonant of Francesca Woodman and Roger Ballen, Serge's imagery will stay with you.
