(19 Sep 2012) Mexican President-elect Enrique Pena Nieto visited Colombia on Tuesday, the second stop in his tour of Latin America.
He was escorted to a meeting with President Juan Manuel Santos by Colombia's Foreign Minister Maria Angelica Holguin and Commerce Minister Sergio Diaz Granados.
Aides say Santos and Pena Nieto discussed security, drug trafficking, trade and other issues.
In a news conference, the Mexican leader said he looked forward to working with Santos.
"I have asked President Santos to maintain our longstanding collaboration to support the strategic adjustments that my government is doing to ensure security for the people of Mexico," said Pena Nieto.
Pena Nieto also said he would like to expand cooperation through all of Latin America in a Pacific Alliance.
But the key issue is security, with both Mexico and Colombia facing well-armed drug traffickers.
"On the issue of security, I would like to express my total support for the initiative of President Santos's government to promote peace in Colombia, including the negotiations started by his government with the FARC," Pena Nieto said.
Pena Nieto, who is due to be sworn in as Mexican President on December 1, next visits Brazil.
His tour will also include Chile, Argentina and Peru.
