Presenter: Christie St. Clair, Chief, U.S.C.G Organizational Communication
Christie St. Clair created and leads the U.S. Coast Guard's first internal communications office. Her team is responsible for ensuring Coast Guard members, civilians, retirees, veterans and their families have the news and resources they need to be mission-ready. In addition to developing communication plans, social media campaigns, and developing strategic messaging, her six-member team manages the daily news site, MyCG.
She led the Coast Guard's COVID-19 communications team, oversaw creation of the service's COVID response website, and helped local commands thoughtfully message critical health information to members and dependents.
St. Clair is passionate about efficient, effective comms. Her work at the Coast Guard has boosted unit cybersecurity incident reporting by 20%, driven a 75% improvement in user adoption for Microsoft Teams, and helped increase military women's retention rates by 11%.
During the 2017 hurricanes, she created #HarveySOS then formed an international nonprofit that enabled 17,000 rescues by organizing social media volunteers during one of the world's most successful crowdsourced emergency response events. Now known as CEDR, the organization remains on the cutting edge of emergency response crowdsourcing tactics, technology and training. (They're also looking for volunteers!)
St. Clair's professional background includes serving as a press officer for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, specializing in emergency management and health risk communications. She's also been a magazine editor in chief, writer for glossy magazines, and presidential campaign analyst for CNN and Sirius XM.
She has a bachelor's in journalism from the University of Maryland (which she chose because Penn State didn't offer her the main campus for the first semester), has come to terms with never getting a Master’s degree, and lives in Northern Virginia with her husband and teenage son.
