President Donald Trump touted what he called the "record-setting crowd" expected at his rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma Saturday, despite warnings from health officials over the possible spread of coronavirus.
The weekend rally, Trump's first since most of the country was shuttered by the virus, will be held indoors, at a 19,000-seat arena that has canceled all other events through the end of July.
Scientists believe the virus spreads far more easily in crowded enclosed spaces than it does outdoors and health experts are citing the dangers of possible spread.
Speaking with reporters in the Cabinet Room Monday, Trump brushed off those concerns, saying Oklahoma has a "very low number of cases."
He also minimized the spiking case numbers in neighboring states, like Texas, saying the rise is due to more testing in the prisons there.
Trump's rallies typically draw tens of thousands of supporters. They usually stand outside in line for hours before passing through airport-style security and cramming into an arena, where they sit side by side or stand shoulder to shoulder. The rallies are typically raucous, with much shouting, cheering and chanting.
Many attendees are also older, which would put them at higher risk of severe complications from COVID-19. It's not unusual for several individuals in the crowd to require medical attention when the temperature rises.
None of that appeared to phase the president. "We expect to have, you know, it's like a record setting crowd. We've never had an empty seat and we certainly won't in Oklahoma," he said.
Trump also commented about the weekend shooting death of Rayshard Brooks, a black man, by a white officer in Atlanta.
Trump said he wouldn't compare it to the George Floyd case, but said it was "a terrible situation" and" very disturbing."
He said he'd have more to say on the case Tuesday.
