The grand finale of the greatest jazz birthday party ever. And on this, the 8th and final week of this historic Blue Note NYC run, none other than the greatest of greats, John McLaughlin, was in the house to help Chick celebrate his 75th birthday year in the grandest of styles. I’m talking “You Know, You Know” and “Lotus on Irish Streams” from Inner Mounting Flame and “Miles Beyond” from Birds of Fire. And “Romantic Warrior” and the first track of the RTF classic album “The Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy.” It was dream-like, actually. There on the stage were the three giants who actually had played on one of the true game-changing albums of all times—Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew. Chick, John and drum titan and original member of the "electric-version" of RTF, Lenny White. Joined by bass-master and serious student of this music — Victor Wooten. Audiences were also blown away by an ethereal as well as fiery take of John McLaughlin’s “Smile of the Beyond”, sung like a songbird by Chick’s soulmate and the only person to have been a member of both Return to Forever and The Mahavishnu Orchestra: Gayle Moran Corea. With surprise sit-ins on the final night, final set of this 80-show run from Kenny Garrett, Wallace Roney and Béla Fleck. Let’s just say love was in the air. You’ll be hearing about this event for years to come — recordings and videos were made. For now, enjoy this final clip from our 8-week series. What an absolute blast and honor to have been involved! History was made.
