Full review of using the GoPro Hero9 for hiking and travel footage, whether it's worth it to upgrade from the Hero8 or not.
How good is the gopro hero 9 battery life? I try to answer all these questions for those wanting to record long hikes and travel videos.
GoPro Hero9 Footage Settings
My ISO settings were maxed at 1600 (set by me). Protune: GoPro color grading=OFF / Sharpness=LOW / Bitrate=HIGH / 5K Wide (unless noted in video hiking footage) Adjusted the color grade in Adobe Premiere Pro and bumped the sharpness up to 35.
Review was done in my apartment with flashpoint lights and a little natural sunlight. Filmed with Nikon D780, 24mm 1.8 and Rode shotgun video mic pro.
Start off hiking in Colorado on a small, beautiful mountain called Mt. Morrison located in Morrison, Colorado. Mt. Morrison offers spectacular views of Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Began the hike up the mountain about 30 minutes before sunrise. This is when I turned on the GoPro Hero9 for the first time outdoors to see how it handle low light footage.
I played around with some of the timewarp footage and I'm really impressed with the results. Although the footage is way more smooth when walking/running on flat ground, as opposed to hiking up and down the mountain. In the future I will remember and take that into consideration when filming upcoming hiking videos.
Made it to the summit of Mt. Morrison in 1 hour. Once at the summer I started playing around with the slow motion settings so I could compare the different settings. Recorded the slow motion at 4K 60fps, 2.7K 120fps and 1080HD at 240fps.
Hiked down the mountain and was impressed with the stabilization on the way down the Class 2 scramble from the summit. Not to shaky, even though in actuality it was all over the place. Once past the scramble of the hike when I got to a flat part of the trail, I started running to see how the stabilization handled it. Overall I was extremely impressed with the video stabilization.
Camera and Pictures
Took several pictures with the GoPro Hero9 throughout the hike to try and show y'all how the camera does. In my opinion it's on par with most of the modern phone cameras that are on the market today. For small prints and web use they are super sharp. Taking the photographs in RAW mode will also let you do more in post processing, if you choose to do that. I posted several pictures that were lightly processed with some preset LUT's to give you an idea of the images it produces.
Tips: If you don't have an editing program such as Premiere Pro, keep your in camera settings to GoPro Color and sharpness at medium to high. Taking photos you can choose jpeg, which will be processed by the GoPro. Nothing wrong with these settings I just like to have full control over everything when editing a video.
Linear Mode Tilt Stabilization 5K
Didn't use this setting on the hike to Mt. Morrison but did use it a lot the next on my hike to the Wild Basin of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. There are several clips of this in action towards the review part of the video.
GoPro Hero 9 Battery Life
On one charge I was able to get 40 5K clips, 25 timewarp at 4K, around 20 slow motion clips at various settings, 30 pictures. The outside temp was about 50 degrees F. This is a significant improvement over the GoPro Hero8 and 7 battery life. Note that I turned off the selfie screen to save battery life. As well as turning off voice control, wifi, sharpening and color grading.
Other Stuff
The thumbnail of this video was shot with the GoPro Hero9 camera and edited in Adobe Lightroom.
This is the best GoPro camera ever and so far I am extremely happy with it.
