'The Lincolnshire Poacher' in the style of Tchaikovsky
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The British pianist and broadcaster Joseph Cooper (1912-2001) had a varied career, but is best remembered as the chairman of the 1960s-70s BBC TV show 'Face the Music'. This was a panel game featuring a panel of popular humorists who had to answer various questions. There was always a 'Hidden Melody' round in which the panellists had to guess the identity of a tune hidden in an 'improvisation' in the style of a famous composer. The subtlety of the improvisations-in which Cooper would quote from various works of the composer as well as the hidden tune-was such that I am sure he would have thought them out well beforehand! The melodies were never that obvious, and I was always amazed that the panel guessed them (maybe they were tipped off by the show's producers!). In 1975 Paxton published a selection of six improvisations which Cooper transcribed from the broadcasts, and also issued as a recording. This one has a reasonably well-known British folk tune hidden in it, and quotes some famous Tchaikovsky moments.
