Derek Stepan’s OT goal lifts Rangers to thrilling Game 7 win!
Derek Stepan got the game-winner 11:24 into overtime and was anointed the next hero in Rangers lore, off a rebound from a Dan Girardi shot that gave the Blueshirts a 2-1 win over the Capitals and sent them into a meeting with so many of their old friends now playing for the Lightning, lying in wait in the East final.
Stepan became the first Ranger to score an overtime winner in a Game 7 since Stephane Matteau in the 1994 East final against the Devils — and that postseason run ended in the franchise’s only Stanley Cup victory since 1940. The 1994 team was also the most recent Rangers squad to win the Presidents’ Trophy, before this year’s team turned the trick.
