Zinc is the slowest to dissolve, thus providing the longest-lasting protection, but might have negative health effects. Aluminum is the one that fights the sulfur /rotten eggs/ smell when you have it, but is the fastest to dissolve- needs to be replaced more often. Magnesium is the choice right in between. You might be able to find an aluminum-zinc product as well.
If there is a salt water softener in the house the average replacement interval is 2 years. If there is no water purification in the home, the interval is 7-8 years.
Lastly you can also get an electronic anode rod and get the benefits of all the aforementioned without any of the disadvantages mentioned above.
