First of all, there is no perfect research and development strategy. If you think there is a perfect strategy, you are mistaken. There is often a strategy that works best for you.

Here are some basic strategies for research and development that I think work OK.

Leverage the problems that people have around you. You often do not know what the best thing to perform is, so often a good strategy is to do the thing that other people have trouble with.

Select the projects that fit with your core competencies. This means that you likely have to know what you are good at, and you might not know what that strength is.

Work on making your own business work better. You might have an idea about problems that drive you crazy, and fixing those problems go a long way.

You can look at the competitive landscape, and see the weak points that others perform in which you can do a bit better than them.
