Verdi's "Don Carlo" is an astonishing opera. Premiered in 1867 in Paris, in French, with 5 acts plus ballet, it lasts over 4 hours of music. And it wasn't Verdi's greatest success. What's more, it was unfortunate that Verdi's librettist, Joseph Méry, passed away in the middle of the composition phase. I'm not an expert, but that was probably less than ideal... Over the years, Verdi created 6 more versions of his Don Carlo, with the most commonly performed one being the 5-act Italian version, without the ballet.
Princess Eboli in Verdi's "Don Carlo" is the most fascinating character in this opera. Eboli's choices drive the story. Her love for Don Carlo and jealousy of Queen Elisabeth lead to crucial events and deadly consequences. She betrays secrets, loves one man, betrays another, and allies with a third. causing trouble for everyone. Who couldn’t relate to that? Well...
But despite, or even: because of her mistakes, we can empathize with her. Her vulnerability and search for redemption make her so captivating.
