Here I cross one of the most tense and disputed borders on earth: the Green Line between territory controlled by the Republic of Cyprus, and the region governed by Northern Cyprus (an area recognized only by Turkiye as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and considered by people in the south to be occupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus). This is the Ledra Street crossing in Nicosia, Cyprus, the only divided capital in the world. Between the two areas is the United Nations Buffer Zone (a.k.a. the Green Line), a sort of no-man’s land patrolled by UN forces. In this video I cross the Green Line into Northern Cyprus, walk around a bit, and then return south, after which I walk along the U.N. Buffer Zone, where the remnants from the bloody war between the two sides remain frozen in time.
