I'm Mike Bius with Illinois Gun Pros.
There is a lot to know about where you cannot carry a concealed firearm in Illinois -- the 23 locations called the "Prohibited Areas." In understanding where you cannot carry, you will want to have a thorough understanding of what you can do if you find yourself in one of the areas while you are in your car.
Arguably the best provision of this law is the Vehicle Safe Harbor Provision. This entitles someone with an Illinois License to Carry to enter the Parking Lot of a Prohibited Area without worrying that they are committing a Misdemeanor.
Now there are two exceptions to the Safe Harbor provision: namely Nuclear plants and Federal facilities. They do NOT have to abide by Illinois Law. However, whether it is a school, or a bar, or a gambling casino or anywhere else where you are not allowed to carry, you CAN leave your gun locked in your vehicle and you are perfectly legal.
For those people who don't have a lockbox or portable safe in their vehicle and would rather put their gun in their trunk, this is allowed by the law as long as TWO conditions are met.
FIRST, you must unload your gun before exiting the vehicle. SECOND, you must go DIRECTLY to your trunk to store your gun.
Illinois' Concealed Carry law is far from perfect, but understanding the law as it pertains to your vehicle is critical if you are going to carry with confidence.
