A view of Lamayuru Monastery, Leh district, India. It is a Tibetan- Buddhist Monastery situated in Lamayuru, a small village on the Srinagar- Leh Highway, NH 1- D. Lamayuru Monastery, also known as Yung-Drung, is home to more than 150 monks and houses a rich collection of artifacts, wall paintings, thangkas, statues, carpets and an impressive 11-headed, 1000 eyed image of Chenzing. Surrounded by the massive moonscapes of Lamayuru Village, the monastery not only holds cultural and religious significance but reeks of its ancient past. There are several legends about the Monastery. According to one, it dates back to the 10th century when an Indian scholar named Mahasiddhacharya Naropa laid the foundation stone for it on a dried lake blessed by the Lama. The Monastery also hosts two annual masked dance festivals in the second and fifth months of the Tibetan lunar calendar, when all the monks from the surrounding gompas gather together to pray. It is believed to have housed more than 400 monks in earlier times. Meditation Hill near the monastery is another attraction, the prayer stones are said to be centuries old and are carved beautifully in Tibetan script.
It is one of the major tourist attractions between Kargil and Leh.
