This pathological condition is called kyphosis. Kyphosis of unknown etiology, which begins in adolescence before puberty is called Scheuermann's disease. Scheuermann's kyphosis is more common in boys than in girls and continues to worsen with age. The spine is composed of 33 separate bones, in four distinct regions. The bones of the spine are called vertebrae, and they are each numbered. The normal spine is not perfectly straight when viewed from the side. The thoracic region has a normal forward curvature, ranging from 20 to 50 degrees. The lumbar and cervical curves are reversed. Scheuermann’s kyphosis occurs when the curve in the thoracic spine exceeds 50 degrees. Sometimes Scheuermann’s kyphosis can cause compression of the internal organs and disrupt their function. In severe cases, kyphosis can affect the lungs, heart, nerves, and other tissues.
