For centuries the execution method of burning at the stake was used brutally to kill those people who had been convicted of very serious offences. It is mostly associated today with the reign of 'Bloody' Mary I, who burned hundreds of Protestants at the stake during her short 5 year reign in the Tudor Period. However it was used for centuries before that, with Joan of Arc being executed in the horrific and bloody thirsty way. However it was used up until the 1700s in Britain, and the final time it was used was to execute a woman convicted of treason.

Catherine Murphy alongside her husband had been sentenced to death for 'coining,' or coin clipping which was considered very serious. For this, the pair were to be executed alongside 7 other men at Newgate Prison. Their executions occurred in March 1789, but Catherine was to be burned alive, rather than to be hanged like her husband. In front of a large crowd, her brutal death sentence was carried out, but there is mystery around her death and execution, as it's believed she was killed before the fire was lit. This would have made her death less painful, but does add doubt whether Catherine Murphy's execution was the last burning at the stake.
