(25 Aug 2013) MOSCOVITES CELEBRATE GORKY PARK
Moscow's biggest park marked it's 85 years anniversary on Saturday (24 August) with it's first carnival for many years.
The first ever carnival was held in Gorky Park in 1936 but in recent decades the tradition has not taken place.
After the fall of Soviet Union in the 90's, the area was transformed into amusement park with cheap and dangerous attractions for people, owned by entrepreneurs whose only goal was making money.
In 2010 the area was completely rebuilt over the course of several months, and now Moscow's central park is one of the most popular places in the city.
The carnival on Saturday was a celebration for those who were involved in re-thinking and modernizing the area.
"It is a place where small children can go and actively spend their free time. Not only an amusement park. We entertained ourselves today by doing these (costumes). It is creativity. I think it is much better now than before," said carnival participant Maksim.
