A lot of British people think that Americans sound foolish or uneducated when they hear them say "gotten". This is mostly because they don't know the full history of the word.
The British were using "gotten" long before the USA even existed. The origin of the word is is British, not American. However, they have almost completely stopped using it in the UK, wherwas we have continued using it in the US.
