Thanks for stopping by, this is 2 Minute Classroom and today we are talking about just how much energy the sun has.

Spoiler alert, it’s a lot.

For example, the amount of solar energy that hits the earth in a single day is more energy than the entire planet consumes in the course of a year.

And that’s just the energy that hits the earth. The amount of energy produced by the sun every second is 380 billion terajoules. 380,000,000,000 terajoules. Let’s try to make sense of that number.

The amount of energy used each year by the entire world is about 580 million terajoules, which means the sun produces enough energy in one second to supply over 650 years of earth’s energy consumption. Wild.

The largest hydrogen bomb ever, Tzar bomba, produced about 200,000 terajoules of energy. So in a single second, the sun produces the same energy as 1.9 million Tzar bombas.

This last example is particularly relevant because hydrogen bombs and the sun both use the same process, nuclear fusion, to produce their energy.

Nuclear fusion, as the name implies, is the fusion of two atomic nuclei. The most common form of nuclear fusion is when two hydrogen isotopes come together to create a helium atom.

The combination of the two hydrogen nuclei to create a helium atom releases radiant energy and this is the source of the sun’s energy.

Constant nuclear fusion caused by the high temperature and pressure of the sun’s core produces all the energy we have been talking about today.
