Paulus Matthijsz (1613/14–1684), the publisher of Jacob van Eyck’s Der fluyten lust-hof, was himself an avid amateur recorder player. He was the author of the ‘Vertoninge en Onderwyzinge op de Hand-fluit’, a recorder instruction that can be found in various original copies of the Lust-hof, although the instruction was actually part of the anthology ’t Uitnemend kabinet II (1649).

In 1644, when publishing Van Eyck’s first works, Matthijsz also launched an anthology which he called Der goden fluit-hemel (The gods’ recorder heaven). Various composers are represented, but Matthijsz himself made the most contributions. This charming ‘Courante Monsieur’ is one of them. Originally, it consists of a theme (two repeated strains) with a single congruent variation, Modo 2. Erik Bosgraaf combines them into a theme with varied reprises.
