I built this after discovering my typical store bought baby gate was damaging my staircase banister. Materials run about $50.
Top and bottom rails are 3/4 dimensional boards that I dado’d down the middle to fit the vertical pieces (3/4 stock sliced in half). I used a quarter on the ends of the vertical pieces to draw a rough line to round the ends to, and did that with a disc sander. Drilled holes all the way through the horizontal boards and ends of vertical sections (insert in the dados), and then widened the holes very slightly on the vertical pieces so they moved smoothly once I hammered the dowels through.
As you can see, I didn’t do a good job of showing the process. I based my build off a video I found by Brian Hilson, and he does a great job of showing how to build one step by step. He built it differently, but the general
idea is the same. I’d recommend watching his video if you’re going to build one.
