Dakh Daughters is one of the most original well-known Ukrainian acts and I was thrilled to find the ad about their upcoming gig in Hamburg! Their music is not for everybody, it's a terrific mix of cabaret, classical music, electronic and punk. Very avant-garde stuff. It wasn't a usual DD show though, it was rather a very special program designed against the Russian aggression in Ukraine.
In this video, you can see not only a few songs but also the opening speech by the general council of Ukraine in Hamburg Iryna Tybinka (it was really great so I'm very sorry if you don't speak any German) and two “spoken” tracks with German subtitles with truly heartbreaking memories of the Ukrainian refugees. Just to be clear, all lyrics were in Ukrainian and you could see the German translation high on the screen. Surely, it was an evening to remember... Also, the part when the ladies came to the stage with their artistic director and an interpreter after the show to answer questions and hear stories of the refugees (anyone with a Ukrainian ID could come for free). Many people cried and... fuck, the war isn't over yet. Actually, while I'm typing this text Russia is bombing the city of Mykolaiv and trying to start a huge offensive blow in Donbas. Have you ever had this feeling when you're afraid to go to sleep because of the news you might read the next morning?
I hope we'll remember that evening in Thalia Theater in many years and smile because it was an evening of true spiritual unity and our victory was already in sight. I hope.
