European politicians have threatened Hungary with unprecedented sanctions if the right-wing government does not withdraw some of its anti-European Union rhetoric. A concerted campaign by the Hungarian government blames the European Union for many of its problems. Yet critics of Hungary say it gets billions of dollars every year in European grants, only for the money to disappear because of corruption.
